Random Access Memory (RAM) is one of the most important components in a computer, often referred to as its short-term memory. Unlike long-term storage devices like hard drives or SSDs, RAM is temporary—it only holds data while the computer is powered on. Once you shut down your system, everything in RAM is cleared. RAM is used to store data that the CPU needs quickly, such as open programs, files, and the operating system's active processes. This allows your computer to work faster and more efficiently. For example, when you open a web browser, edit a document, or play a game, the data and instructions needed for those tasks are loaded into RAM for quick access. The amount of RAM you have significantly affects your computer’s performance. If your system doesn’t have enough RAM to handle your tasks, it may slow down or start using a portion of the hard drive as "virtual memory," which is much slower. That’s why modern computers typically come with 8GB, 16GB, or more RAM, especially for tasks like video editing, gaming, or running multiple applications at once. RAM is measured in gigabytes (GB) and its speed is measured in megahertz (MHz). Faster RAM (higher MHz) can improve the system’s responsiveness, especially in combination with a fast CPU and SSD. RAM sticks are installed into RAM slots on the motherboard, and most systems support dual-channel or even quad-channel memory for improved performance. There are different types of RAM, with DDR4 and DDR5 being the most common in modern computers. Each new generation offers better speed, efficiency, and capacity. However, the type of RAM you can use depends on your motherboard. In simple terms, RAM helps your computer think faster and work smoother. The more RAM you have, the more your system can handle at once without slowing down.
